Today's News Update - 11th Oct 2024 Asia Asia-Pacific markets closed higher on Thursday, buoyed by gains on Wall Street, where the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average reached new records as investors overlooked geopolitical concerns. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.43% to finish at 8,223 points. Japan’s Nikkei 225 increased by 0.26%, closing at 39,380.89, while the broader Topix climbed 0.2% to end at 2,712.67. US In the U.S. overnight, the S&P 500 climbed 0.71% to close at 5,792.04 after reaching a record high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 431.63 points, or 1.03%, finishing at a record close of 42,512. The Nasdaq Composite also rose, gaining 0.6% to end at 18,291.62. Wall Street held onto its gains following the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve’s September meeting, which indicated that a "substantial majority of participants" supported a half-percentage-point reduction in interest rates. Commodity Gold prices continued to rise on Thursday as traders increased their expectations for a Federal Reserve interest-rate cut next month, spurred by recent U.S. economic data. Spot gold climbed 0.6% to $2,623.58 per ounce, aiming to end a six-session losing streak. U.S. gold futures also rose, settling 0.5% higher at $2,639.30. Meanwhile, oil prices surged over 3% on Thursday, driven by a spike in U.S. fuel consumption ahead of Hurricane Milton’s arrival in Florida, concerns about Middle East supply, and signs of increasing energy demand in the U.S. and China. Brent futures rose by $2.82, or 3.68%, closing at $79.40 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude increased $2.61, or 3.56%, settling at $75.85 per barrel.
