In a world that can often feel overwhelming, uncertain, and deeply disconnected, how do we remain present without becoming consumed by fear or helplessness? How can spiritual practice help us respond to the challenges of our time with greater clarity, compassion, and courage?

The Fierce Heart of Now invites participants to explore these questions through a weeklong residential retreat that brings together Buddhist practice, interconnection, and a deeper exploration of how awakening can be lived in everyday life.

Meeting the Present Moment With Courage

Spiritual practice is not only about finding peace within ourselves. It can also transform how we relate to other people, our communities, our responsibilities, and the wider world.

The Fierce Heart of Now is designed for people who want to meet the present moment with greater steadiness and openness. Rather than turning away from difficult emotions or global uncertainty, the retreat encourages participants to develop the capacity to stay connected while responding to life with wisdom and compassion.

At the heart of this approach is spiritual abundance—an exploration of how our relationship with money, energy, resources, purpose, and contribution can become part of our spiritual path rather than something separate from it.

Exploring Interconnection Through Practice

The retreat weaves together The Work That Reconnects by Joanna Macy, Vajrayana Buddhist practice, meditation, and teachings on spiritual abundance. Together, these practices create an opportunity to explore the relationship between inner transformation and meaningful participation in the world.

The Work That Reconnects offers a powerful framework for moving through difficult emotions and reconnecting with a deeper sense of purpose. Instead of viewing grief, fear, or overwhelm as obstacles to spiritual growth, participants are invited to meet these experiences directly and discover what they can reveal.

The retreat follows four stages:

  • Gratitude – Recognizing what sustains us and opening to connection.
  • Honoring Our Pain for the World – Making space for grief, uncertainty, and overwhelm.
  • Seeing With New Eyes – Recognizing interdependence and discovering new perspectives.
  • Going Forth – Bringing awareness into daily life through wise and compassionate action.

This progression encourages participants to move from simply understanding interconnection intellectually toward experiencing it more deeply.

Bringing Spirituality Into Everyday Life

One of the distinctive elements of the retreat is its exploration of money and resources as part of spiritual practice.

Money can carry powerful emotions and deeply rooted patterns involving scarcity, fear, self-worth, trust, and belonging. By bringing awareness to these patterns, participants can begin to develop a more conscious and relational approach to money and the resources they exchange with others.

This perspective reflects a broader understanding of Dharma: nothing is outside the path of awakening. Our relationships, work, finances, choices, and contributions can all become opportunities to practice awareness and compassion.

Rather than separating spiritual life from everyday responsibilities, The Fierce Heart of Now encourages participants to discover how inner transformation can naturally influence the way they live and participate in the world.

A Retreat Rooted in Shared Dharma

The retreat is co-led by Karen McAllister and Lama Linda Hochstetler, two experienced Dharma teachers connected through the lineage of Namgyal Rinpoche. Their complementary backgrounds bring together Buddhist teachings, meditation, relational practice, and practical engagement with the challenges of contemporary life.

Participants can expect daily meditation and teachings, guided group processes, time for reflection and integration, and opportunities to explore how spiritual practice expresses itself beyond formal meditation.

This creates space not only for learning, but also for experiencing what it means to practice within a community.

Who Can Benefit From This Retreat?

The Fierce Heart of Now may be particularly meaningful for spiritual practitioners, Buddhists, caregivers, therapists, healers, leaders, change-makers, and anyone who feels called to respond to the world with greater clarity and compassion.

It may also speak to those who are:

  • Feeling overwhelmed by the challenges of the world
  • Looking to deepen their Dharma practice
  • Exploring their relationship with money and resources
  • Seeking greater alignment between values and actions
  • Wanting to cultivate resilience and courageous participation
  • Interested in understanding interconnection through direct experience

Returning to Life With a Fierce Heart

A retreat does not end when the formal practices are complete. The deeper invitation is to bring what has been discovered back into everyday life.

The Fierce Heart of Now offers an opportunity to explore how presence can become participation, how insight can become action, and how spiritual practice can shape the way we relate to ourselves, others, and the world.

By creating space for meditation, reflection, community, grief, gratitude, and courageous inquiry, this retreat invites participants to develop a more grounded way of meeting uncertainty.

Ultimately, the fierce heart is not about becoming harder. It is about developing the courage to remain open—to life, to others, to difficult emotions, and to the possibilities that emerge when we recognize our deep interconnection.

If you are ready to explore Dharma as a lived path of awakening, connection, and compassionate action, The Fierce Heart of Now offers a meaningful space to begin or deepen that journey.
