The Merge was the first of five upgrades planned for the Ethereum. Its a transition to a more energy-efficient PoS (Proof-of-Stake) consensus mechanism. This resulted in more tokens being burned than created, which dropped the supply by 4,000 tokens. The next 4 upgrades may produce similar results.
